Frequently Asked Questions
If I donate to Friends of Glencoe Scouting, how will my contributions be used?
We are an independent nonprofit that accepts tax-deductible gifts on behalf of Troop 28 and Pack 28; all donations go to support them. We have paid for scholarships for large expenses (e.g. summer camp, High Adventure) and for shared equipment such as tents and trailers. We help ensure no Scout misses these opportunities due to financial need.
Can a Troop or Pack solicit gifts?
No. Our local Northeast Illinois Council may solicit gifts, but individual Scouting units may not solicit donations.
Does that mean people can’t make gifts to a Troop or Pack?
Units can receive unsolicited gifts; they just can’t solicit. Anyone may give to a unit; many donors don’t need a tax deduction. We rely on leaders to follow the spirit of the rules.
Can fundraising go to a specific individual?
No, the IRS treats that as private benefit. The unit may use raised funds to lower dues and fees, buy uniforms and books, buy gear, or assist scouts in financial hardship; it just can’t credit a specific amount to a specific person’s account.
I don’t wish to donate online. Can I still donate?
Yes. Mail a check payable to Friends of Glencoe Scouting to 1 East Wacker Drive, Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601.
My question isn’t answered here. Is there someone I can contact?
Yes. Email friends (at) glencoescouting.org with any other questions.
